Editorial Policy

Editorial Policy | InternetAdvice.ca

The Short Version: We’re not owned by any ISP. We don’t accept payment for reviews. Our recommendations are based on real industry experience, hands-on testing, and rigorous research. When we get something wrong, we fix it publicly.

Our Independence

InternetAdvice.ca is editorially independent. This means:

  • No ISP ownership: We are not owned, funded, or controlled by any internet service provider, telecommunications company, or industry association.
  • No paid reviews: ISPs cannot pay for positive coverage. We do not accept payment in exchange for reviews, rankings, or recommendations.
  • No editorial interference: We currently have no affiliate partnerships (explained below) never influence our editorial content. The people who write and edit our content have no knowledge of or involvement in commercial relationships.
  • Honest criticism: We will criticize providers, including those we have affiliate relationships with, when their service falls short.

✓ Our Promise

We recommend what we would personally use and recommend to our own family members.

How We Research

Our content is built on multiple layers of research:

Primary Sources

  • CRTC filings and regulatory documents – Official data on network coverage, wholesale rates, and compliance
  • Official ISP websites — Current pricing, plans, terms of service, and coverage maps
  • Speed test data — Aggregated performance data from Ookla Speedtest, nPerf, and our own testing
  • Industry reports — Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission annual reports, Statistics Canada data

Secondary Sources

  • Customer reviews — Verified feedback from Reddit (r/canadianISP, city-specific subreddits), Google Reviews, Trustpilot
  • News coverage — Reporting from established telecommunications and technology publications
  • Community feedback — Direct reader submissions and corrections

First-Hand Experience

Our editorial team brings nearly 15 years of direct experience working in the Canadian telecommunications industry. This includes:

  • Roles at national carriers and regional providers
  • Experience with network operations, capacity planning, and infrastructure
  • Direct knowledge of wholesale pricing, retail margin structures, and promotional mechanics
  • Personal use of many of the services we review

Writing Standards

Every piece of content on InternetAdvice.ca follows these standards:

  1. Research Phase: We gather data from primary sources, verify pricing and availability, and review customer feedback before writing.
  2. Writing Phase: Content is drafted with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and practical usefulness for Canadian consumers.
  3. Review Phase: All content is reviewed by our lead editor (Michael Latymer) for accuracy, completeness, and editorial quality.
  4. Fact-Check Phase: Key claims — especially pricing, speeds, and availability — are verified against primary sources before publication.
  5. Publication & Monitoring: Published content is monitored for reader feedback and updated as market conditions change.

What We Don’t Do

  • We don’t republish ISP marketing copy as editorial content
  • We don’t guarantee rankings based on advertising spend
  • We don’t publish content written by ISPs or their agencies without clear disclosure
  • We don’t make claims we can’t verify or support

Updates & Freshness

The Canadian ISP market changes constantly. Pricing shifts, plans are retired, new technologies roll out, and service quality fluctuates. To keep our content accurate:

  • Quarterly reviews: All major city guides and provider profiles are reviewed at least every three months
  • Last Updated dates: Every article displays when it was last reviewed and updated
  • Reader feedback loop: We encourage readers to report outdated information via comment section

Note: ISP pricing is notoriously fluid. Promotional rates change weekly, and regional pricing can vary. We aim for accuracy but recommend verifying current pricing directly with providers before making decisions.

    Corrections Policy

We’re human. We make mistakes. When we do, here’s how we handle it:

    • Acknowledgment: We acknowledge errors openly rather than silently editing content
    • Correction notes: Significant corrections are noted at the top of the affected article with the date and nature of the correction
    • Transparency: We don’t pretend we were right all along — we explain what was wrong and what we’ve fixed
    • Speed: We aim to correct factual errors within 24 hours of verification

    Questions About Our Editorial Policy
